What Is Greenwashing?
When a product is made to appear more environmentally friendly or healthy than it actually is.
Unfortunately, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) guidelines and regulations for candle-makers are limited--and the candle industry takes advantage of this. Manufacturers are able to market their candle as "all natural" even when they utilize ingredients that don't align. Such include:
Soy Wax
Commonly extracted from genetically modified soybeans treated with pesticides and/or mixed with undisclosed waxes, such as paraffin wax or bleached
Artificial Scents
Scents are considered proprietary fragrances. Candle-makers are not obligated to list the ingredients used to create their scents.
Synthetic Beeswax
Designed to be generally indistinguishable from all natural beeswax. It is often used in place of or mixed in with it's all natural counterpart--but still marketed as "all natural."

Colors
Colored candles are quite attractive but pose unnecessary health risks. Pigments used in candles can be toxic to humans as well as the environment. Synthetic dyes emit dangerous Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) such as formaldehyde, petroleum distillates and esters. Exposure can cause headaches, nausea, respiratory issues and damage to the nervous system. Candle Caboodle colors are created using all natural dyes commonly used for centuries to dye textiles. Such includes indigo powder, (purples, lavenders), cochineal (pinks), and spirulina powder (greens).
